Sonic Prime's Metal Sonic--WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM?!

A huge thing everyone's excited for in Sonic Prime's second season is Metal Sonic. We saw him appear at the very end of the trailer for, like, five seconds, and already we can tell there's gonna be some battle between him and Sonic, likely (hopefully!) a Sonic CD-style speed battle.

But one thing few people seem to appreciate is Metal Sonic's design. The famous original look made Metal Sonic the most vicious, awesome robotic hedgehog ever, with an evil leer and sharp red eyes. He was truly a robotic menace. But even then, in the Sonic comics and sometimes the games, there is something so emotional about him--you can almost tell what he's thinking. (If you read the Sonic Annual comic that ran during the "Metal Virus" saga, recall the short story about Metal observing a jug of the liquid virus. He's the sole character until the end, and there is so much emotion about him). You can see his evil intentions written all around him--but somehow, there's more to him than just a killing machine. And that's the beauty of it.

But this new Prime version of Metal, while still looking amazing, barely looks like him. It took me a minute to realize who it was (Knux telling Sonic, "It's you," was helpful). His entire face is a screen, devoid of emotion other than two angular red eyes. Perhaps what makes this seem emotionless is that "normal" Metal's red eyes aren't fixed to look angry--it just depends where he's looking. Whereas "Prime" Metal's eyes, being in a screen, constantly look angry. It's that constancy that makes it look fake. In fact, Prime Metal looks more like an AI toy than a robot assassin. Racing alongside Sonic at the very end of the trailer, he even looked playful, not threatening.

Um, I'm sorry, but does Metal look HAPPY when he's about to take off next to Sonic in the below picture?!

Well, no matter the case, the result with Metal Sonic as we'll see in Season 2 of Sonic Prime will still be exciting. And don't take any of this as "I hate Prime Metal Sonic." No, no, I do think he looks amazing, and I know (or hope, at least) his character will be no different from normal Metal Sonic. I just don't understand why they designed him to look cute and smooth, not fierce and sharp-edged.
